Block Paving Bricks

Kinds of edging and brickwork:

There are various kinds of brickwork and edging that you can use on your block paving surface. Here are a number of British based terms for the various ways in which brick can be laid.

First of all, a bond is simply a pattern. This is the way that the brick is actually laid among the other bricks in the block paving.

In terms of edging, block paving stones may be laid on their side rather than flat. This type of brick laying technique is known as a shiner. You may be able to use block paving Rugby slabs in this fashion in order to create a border around your block paving area. Your professional pavers may use this technique with half a brick or half a block paving stone. A “stretcher” is laid horizontally rather than vertically. Its long side is exposed. Another way of laying bricks, the “header”, means that the shorter end of the brick is exposed.

The row lock is another means of paving bricks. This involves laying a brick on its long and narrow side with the head of the brick exposed.

Brick laying kinds called soldier and sailor involve the brick being placed vertically with the narrow or broad side exposed respectively. These kinds of block paving can commonly be found on edges or borders of block paving.

A basketweave effect can be created by placing block paving stones at angles to each other. For example, you can take a brick shaped paving stone and place the narrow end against its neighbour at an angle to create a V shape. The bricks above and below the two bricks in question will be placed at the same angle in a line up and down the block paving area.

There are many ways to lay bricks and block paving, to create very eye catching effects.
