The pros and cons of applying sealant:

Pervious or porous kinds of surface are good for drainage. There are various reasons for and against leaving your brick paving porous to a limited extent.

You can chemically treat your block paving after it has been set so that rainwater will not permeate its surface – or at the very least, the rain will have a difficult time doing so. One of the primary reasons for doing this is so that moisture build up does not have the potential to damage the brick work. Moisture can attract mosses and weeds that would otherwise not grow in the block paving. In extreme cases, frost can potentially get in between the cracks of your block paving, expand and contract under different temperatures and cause splits in the bricks or stones. With a chemical treatment preventing water from getting into the cracks, this is unlikely to happen.

However, to treat the block paving Ludlow with certain chemical sealants is also harmful to the environment, as the chemicals are pollutants. If you don’t wish to use the chemical solvents that are found in many sealants, you may opt for a water based sealant.

As mentioned above, even a water based sealant will undermine the ability for water to drain. Water seepage of this kind is necessary for the natural order. The organisms in the soil below your block paving can act as a kind of filter to clean rain water and other chemicals. This does not necessarily mean that the water would be fit to drink, but drainage of this kind is becoming rarer with each paved, tarmac or imprinted concrete driveway and patio that is built.

The unfortunate consequence of people requiring space for their cars –and so building driveways instead of maintaining lawns – is that water doesn’t have anywhere to run. Rain takes a longer time finding soil, and so it may take too long before there is a lot of water build up. In times of heavy rainfall, this can even in part contribute to flooding as natural lines of drainage have been cut off.
