A stretcher bond course of brick work or block paving makes quite a distinctive look in any environment. A “stretcher” – in the terminology of a bricklayer – is a brick laid horizontally rather than vertically. Its long side is exposed. A stretcher bond course can be used against a surface for its edging. You can use double stretchers or triple stretchers in your design. A border that runs wider than 20 cm is usually more suited to a large area that requires paving. For example, a car park or petrol station forecourt will look good with such a large edging. However, a two lane driveway may also look exceptional with a large border that takes up almost half the space of the entire width. These borders will obviously be flush with the rest of the paving. They are there for aesthetics as opposed to functionality. The requirements for edges, wherein they take responsibility for the distribution of any weights placed on the whole paving area and they also take the burden when it comes to dealing with water run off, will only be in respect of the edge of the edge in cases such as this. Take note that tumbled style block paving appears to have a haphazard pattern. However, these blocks are usually in standard sizes, some larger and some smaller. They can be mixed with stones of different colours to achieve a certain look, but many hard landscapers and bricklayers will advise against this as the multiple colours do not provide as much of a contrast as you would expect. You may use these cobbled stones in a single size to achieve a certain uniformity in an overall pattern. They may also be more effective in the same size, but with different colours.
