What is cobbled block paving?

One of the recent trends that paving companies are noticing is the increased popularity in blocked paving that resembles a cobbled or tumbled look.  The blocks used in this process are cast and molded using concrete and are given a wide variety of rougher finishes, rounded edges and even some misshaping in order to create an older cobbled affect.  The colours available in this style of block paving tend to be more limited then the standard styles but the overall finished product is quite stunning.

In order to give the driveway a rough yet professional look, these blocks are laid using a number of sizes.  Most companies will utilize three sizes that include a small size of 100mm x 134mm, a medium size of 134mm x 134mm and a large size of 134mm x 200mm.  A standard pattern using two or three sizes can be laid in addition to random placements depending on your preference.  Blocks can be cut to make them fit in with whichever edging you choose.

Before beginning a cobbled block paving at your home, speak with the company you have chosen to complete your project and ask for their recommendations as well as samples of previous work completed.  By seeing other completed projects, you can visualize what your driveway will look like when the block paving is completed. ||

Installing a patio: Why it’s the right choice

A patio can be more than a simple block paving surface in your garden. There are features such as walls, edgings and borders, plant life and steps that can be added to your patio as enhancements. Both soft landscaping and hard landscaping elements can combine to reflect a very natural environment in which children can play or guests and visitors can be entertained. Barbecues are a great means of entertainment on a patio. Children can have the fun of playing outdoors without getting their clothes dirty in a clean environment.

The patio can be looked at as an extension of your house. It can be seen as an extra room in your home, weather permitting. As such, design elements from the house itself can be incorporated into the patio design. The brickwork of the house can find echoes in the block paving of your patio.

Walled elements of your patio can be waist high or they can stretch above head height. The walls of a patio can act as retaining structures for a block paving surface. The walls do not have to be entirely solid. They can feature gaps, for example, so that a view of the garden is visible. They may also be composed of brickwork that has designs in it. These designs can themselves have gaps in them to achieve lattice or mesh effects – or more intricate designs. Other elements such as clay tiling can be incorporated into your walls, to match or offset the colour of your block paving.

Steps can be incorporated into your patio too: These can lead from the home to the patio, or from the patio to the garden. A patio at the bottom of the garden can be led to by a pathway that comprises the same or a similar block paving design as the patio surface itself. (13.10.11).
