A sub base, an edge restraint, sand and blocks. The sub base – for the heaviest kinds of domestic use – such as parking areas for large vehicles – a 20 cm thick sub base is required. This comprises quarry waste or crushed stone. For driveways with light car traffic, sub bases are able to be scaled down. The lightest duty sub bases – such as patios and paths – usually only require that the organic materials and the top soil are removed to the depth required and the area compacted. If required, the sub base needs to be laid so that it is an even surface that is closely knit. The course sand which will be required later cannot be allowed to seep into the sub base. Edge restraint is the next level. They may be restrained using existing walls, kerbs, or edging. Common edge restraints may include some mortar along the outside edge of the restraint. If the wall of a house is being used, the block surface needs to be 15 cm below the damp proof course, and the surface with the block paving drains away from the house. The sand laying course must be screeded to a depth of 60 to 65 mm which is then compacted to over two thirds of that depth. The screeding can be carried out with a long plank or piece of wood. The sand must have a uniform consistency in terms of moisture. The blocks are then laid onto the sand and – if necessary – vibration is used to drive some of the sand up into the lower parts of the block joints. The blocks are bedded in such a way that care is taken not to walk over the sand while doing so. The blocks that run along the edge of the paving usually need to be cut.
